Auto Insurance

Most states require that every driver carry auto insurance on their vehicles. Car insurance is the best protection against financial loss if you are involved in an auto accident. If someone has an accident and isn't properly insured, they can face large fines, loss of their driving privileges, and possible criminal charges. Each state has its own rules and penalties for drivers who don't have sufficient coverage.

At-Fault Accidents Without Insurance

If it is determined that you are at fault after an accident and you don't have insurance, you will be responsible for any financial expenses. This includes paying the other driver's medical expenses, repairing their vehicle, and fixing their own vehicle. You will also be charged fines and court costs as well as the loss of your driver's license.

Not-at-Fault Accidents Without Insurance

If you are involved in an accident where the other driver is at fault, you can still be in trouble if you don't have sufficient auto insurance coverage. Your vehicle may be impounded and your driver's license may be suspended. All of the fees associated with the accident and any citations that are issued will be your responsibility and must be paid out of pocket.

States That Don't Require Auto Insurance

Almost every state requires some form of proof of financial responsibility. This can be in the form of an auto insurance policy, an uninsured motorist vehicle fee, or a bond. If you don't have insurance, you will still be financially responsible for any medical expenses or property damage that is a direct result of an accident you are involved.

At-Fault Auto Accidents

Almost every state, even if they require an uninsured motorist vehicle fee, will require you to pay for property damages and injuries that are the result of an accident you caused. If the expenses are not paid and the requirements of the court are not met, you can lose your licenses and your car may be impounded until all the fees are paid.

Not-at-Fault Accidents

If you are not at fault in a car accident, the other driver will be responsible for your medical expenses and property damage. If they don't have sufficient coverage, your auto insurance will pick up where theirs leaves off. You will have to pay out-of-pocket if you don't have car insurance to compensate for their damages.

Finding Affordable Car Insurance

The first step in finding affordable car insurance is to compare quotes from a few carriers. Talk to your friends and family. Look over the different quotes to ensure you are getting the amount of coverage you need. Know what your state's minimum requirements are and what your lender requires if you have a loan on your car.
