New York Winter Driving TipsTips For Staying Safe On The Road This Winter As the winter brings us more snowy weather, it is important to be prepared for everything from a fleeting flurry to a serious storm. Whether you head to the mountains to get some time on the slopes or your biggest snow adventure is to the grocery store for hot chocolate, some precautions can keep you safe on the roads. To be properly prepared for the winter weather, use these winter driving tips.
  • Check Your Tire Type:  Do not be caught on a slick road with tires unable to handle the path ahead. No matter what kind of snow you expect in your city, increased precipitation and decreased temperatures make the winter roads more dangerous. Make sure you have the right tires for these conditions. Snow tires are not necessary unless you plan to spend the majority of the winter up in the mountains, but make sure you have all-terrain tires on all four wheels that are equipped for winter weather.
  • Test Your Tire Pressure:  Underinflated tires have less traction with which to grip the road, and cold weather means your tires will lose pressure. Check your tire pressure at least once a month to ensure you are not left with underinflated tires.
  • Know Your Equipment:  Understand what type of braking system your vehicle has and learn to drive with it. For example, if your car does not have anti-lock brakes, practice pumping your brakes so they do not lock up when going through an icy patch.
